Question: Coffee is involved
with calcium absorption, is it yes or not?
Answer: Drinking one
glass of 180 mg of coffee, it would lose the equilibrium of calcium to 4.3 mg.
The caffeine in coffee will reduce calcium absorption
in the intestine. The caffeine is a mild diuretic and increase sodium excretion
in the urine. As a result, calcium is drawn out in urine as well.
It is not found that coffee drinking has a negative
effect on calcium balance if the calcium intake is not less than 600-800 mg per
day.
However, coffee drinkers tend to avoid drinking milk (milk
is one cause of reducing the absorption of calcium as well). In summary, when drinking
lots of coffee, but not eating enough calcium, it may lose the balance of
calcium.
